Passive Tags

PASSIVE RFID tags have no batteries. The energy to operate the tag is taken from the reader, by capturing the radio waves and translating them into energy.

Typical applications are smart cards, parking entrance cards, animal tracking, etc. Passive tags have found major application potential in the retail industry, pharmaceuticals and in defence.

Several type of passive RFID are available:

Read Write:
Allow to write to the tag and store information for later use

Write Once Read Many:
Allows to write to the tag, but the information gets locked, and can not be overwritten

Read Only or factory programmable:
These operate usually as license plates, with the tag referring back to a database, the same way barcodes usually work.
